Scarface
Dir: Brian De Palma
USA, 1983, 170minmins
Cast: Al Pacino, Michelle Pfeiffer, Steven Bauer
Al Pacino is a dangerously volatile Cuban immigrant drug mobster – an unstable mix of guns and cocaine – operating in Florida in this intensely violent rethinking of the 1932 Hollywood classic that serves as a twisted paean to the excesses of the American Dream. Pacino’s sadistic crime boss is a study in contrasts against the measured restraints of his Michael Corleone in The Godfather sagas. Highly controversial for its scenes of torture and brutal gang murders, Scarface has its defenders, including film critic Roger Ebert, who praised Pacino’s singular performance as “aggressive, over the top, teeth gnashing, arm-waving, cocaine-snorting, scenery chewing.”
