Pain and Glory
Dir: Pedro Almodóvar
Spain, 2019, 113 minmins, DCP
Cast: Antonio Banderas, Penélope Cruz, Asier Etxeandía
Facing ill health, depression and the decline of his powers, an aging director holds on to his passion of filmmaking as the ultimate painkiller for coming to terms with death – and life. Heroin, a new addiction he once despised, brings back ecstatic remembrance of the past: his intimate memories of his mother, the joy of first love and the pain of the first breakup, reconciliation with his estranged muse actor, all the way back to the sensual awakening of desire… A striking Antonio Banderas heralds a thinly veiled deep dive into Almodóvar’s own life and oeuvre – and his soul so purely exposed in trusting honesty.
